Best Android Phones: Holiday 2016

android_smartphones

With the holiday shopping frenzy fast approaching, we’re here with a 2016 Best Android Smartphones guide.

Over the past few months or so, there have been several new Android phones like the Huawei’s Honor 8 and Motorola’s Moto Z Play Droid both cost around $400 and provide some competition for the OnePlus 3, a mid-range phone launched in June. Released in November, the Pixel XL, the larger of Google’s two new Pixel phones, which has an excellent camera; a smooth, pristine Google software experience, including the new Pixel Launcher and Google Assistant; and the promise of timely software updates.

Keeping in mind that this guide only includes phones that I think are worthwhile, since the options can be endless. Here are the Android phones I currently like.

There’s a lot of options to choose from when shopping for a phablet considering the disproportionate number of Android phones having a screen size of 5.5-inches or larger. A number of these fall into the mid-range category, which is covered below. For people living outside of North America there are even more, usually less-expensive, options to consider too.

Samsung_Galaxy_Note_5

Samsung Galaxy Note 5 (32GB, Black)

$542.50 On Amazon

Our previous pick, Samsung’s Galaxy Note5, is still the top of the Note range because of the Note7’s early retirement. Despite its age, it’s still a great phone. Its 5.7-inch 2560×1440 SAMOLED display is still one of the best available, with excellent black levels, reasonably good brightness, and several different display modes ranging from a very accurate sRGB mode to a couple of wider gamut modes with more vivid colors. Its 16MP rear camera with PDAF and OIS is also very good. The Note5’s Exynos 7420 SoC may not top the performance charts anymore, but it’s still plenty quick, and the 4GB of LPDDR4 RAM gives Samsung’s memory hungry TouchWiz UI some extra room to work.

Speaking of TouchWiz, it still has some questionable design elements, and it suffers from some performance hiccups that make the UI feel less fluid, but it does include some useful phablet features, including the ability to shrink the whole screen by pressing the home button three times, the option to use a smaller keyboard for one-handed thumb typing, and the two-pane Multi Window feature that allows you to work in two apps at the same time. There’s also the S-Pen and the additional functionality it provides, just do not stick it back into its silo backwards or you’ll have to break the phone to get it back out.

Samsung Galaxy S7 edge (Intl)

$602.00 On Amazon

For those looking for a more modern choice, or who want a slightly smaller phone, there’s Samsung’s Galaxy S7 edge, with its 5.5-inch 2560×1440 SAMOLED display that’s every bit as good as the Note5’s. Its 12MP rear camera with OIS and an f/1.7 aperture captures great pictures, especially in low-light, and the improved phase detect autofocus (PDAF) is the best available. Battery life is also quite good thanks to a 3600mAh battery. The rest of its hardware and features are shared with the smaller Galaxy S7, including IP68 dust and water protection and wireless charging.

OUKU® Genuine Leather Cover Multi-functional Cards Holder Wallet Case For Samsung Galaxy S7 S7 edge

Earlier this year, Samsung released its seventh generation Galaxy S series. The Galaxy S7 improves upon the design and features of the popular Galaxy S6. The design is very similar, but Samsung has tweaked the curvature of the back, edges, and cover glass to make the phone significantly more ergonomic. The chassis does get thicker and heavier, but this allows for a significant reduction to the camera hump and an increase in battery capacity.

galaxy-s7-edge

Samsung Galaxy S7 (Intl)

$528.48 On Amazon

As far as specs go, the Galaxy S7 comes in two versions. Both have 5.1-inch 2560×1440 SAMOLED displays, 32GB or 64GB of UFS 2.0 NAND, 4GB of LPDDR4 memory, a 12MP Sony IMX260 camera with a f/1.7 aperture, and a 3000mAh battery. Depending on where you live you’ll either get Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 820 or Samsung’s Exynos 8890 SoC, both of which use custom ARM CPU cores. More specifically, the US, Japan, and China versions receive Snapdragon 820, while the rest of the world gets Exynos 8890.

Regardless of which Galaxy S7 you get, you’ll be getting the best hardware that Samsung has to offer. The Galaxy S6 was a good phone, but it was not perfect. The S7 addresses several of these shortcomings with a more ergonomic design, a larger battery, support for microSD cards, and the return of IP68 dust and water protection.

htc_10

HTC 10 (32GB)

$570.87 On Amazon

The other phone worth discussing at the high end is the HTC 10, which manages to best the Galaxy S7 in at least a few areas. In terms of audio quality, design, OEM UI, and other areas like perceptual latency I would argue that HTC is just clearly ahead of Samsung. HTC also has proper USB 3.1 and USB-C support, which does make the device more future-proof than the Galaxy S7’s microUSB connector in that regard. The front facing camera is also just clearly better on the basis of having OIS and optics that can actually focus on a subject instead of being set to infinity at all times.

However, Samsung is clearly ahead in display and its camera is clearly the fastest I’ve ever seen in any phone, bar none. Samsung is also just clearly shipping better WiFi implementations right now in terms of antenna sensitivity and software implementation, along with IP68 water resistance and magstripe payments for the US and South Korea.

To further muddy the waters, there are areas where HTC and Samsung trade blows. While Samsung’s camera is clearly faster, HTC often has better detail in their images, especially at the center of the frame, but the Galaxy S7 has better detail at the edge of the frame. Noise reduction tends to be a bit less heavy-handed and sharpening artifacts are not nearly as strong as they are on the Galaxy S7. HTC’s larger sensor also means that it’s possible to get actual dSLR-like bokeh with macro shots, which is honestly something that I’ve never seen before in any smartphone camera.

Overall, I think it’s pretty fair to say that the HTC 10 is a solid choice. If I had to pick between the two I would probably lean towards the HTC 10, but this is based upon personal priorities. I don’t think you can really go wrong between the two. The HTC 10 with 32 GB of internal storage is currently $549 USD when bought unlocked through HTC and comes in Carbon Gray, Glacial Silver, Camellia Red, and Topaz Gold.

one_plus_3

Oneplus 3 6GB/64GB

$479.99 On Amazon

The OnePlus 3, with its list of impressive hardware at a reasonable price, is still our (upper) mid-range choice. The Motorola Moto Z Play Droid is about the same price and includes a nice display, a good camera, and a large battery—not to mention support for Moto Mods such as the Hasselblad True Zoom Mod—but its eight Cortex-A53 CPU cores and Adreno 506 GPU cannot offer the same level of performance as the OnePlus 3’s Snapdragon 820 SoC. The Moto Z Play Droid also comes with less RAM (3GB), less internal storage (32GB), and lacks 802.11ac Wi-Fi. Its little brother, the Moto G4 Plus costs less than the OnePlus 3—$299 for 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal NAND—but again falls short of the OnePlus 3’s overall user experience.

Huawei’s Honor 8 is another contender that costs the same as the OnePlus 3 and is available in the US and internationally. It also has a smaller 5.2-inch display, giving it a smaller footprint than the OnePlus 3, although its heavily blue-tinted screen may turn some people off. General system performance is on par with the OnePlus 3, but its Mali-T880MP4 GPU cannot match the Adreno 530’s peak performance in the OnePlus 3. The OnePlus 3’s OxygenOS also does not stray as far from stock Android as the Honor 8’s EMUI skin, resulting in a very different user experience between the two phones, although which approach is better comes down to user preference.

When we first looked at the OnePlus 3, Bernie discovered that the display’s grayscale and color accuracy were quite poor, its video quality was subpar, and it evicted apps from RAM too aggressively, especially considering that it comes with 6GB of LPDDR4; however, in subsequent software updates OnePlus has either fixed or improved each of these issues.

The build quality of the OnePlus 3 is excellent, its 16MP rear camera with PDAF and OIS takes nice photos, and its Snapdragon 820 SoC delivers good performance. It also includes 64GB of internal UFS 2.0 NAND storage but no microSD slot, and the usual array of wireless connectivity options including NFC—something the OnePlus 2 lacked. The OnePlus 3 comes in only one configuration and costs $399. With a 5.5-inch 1080p AMOLED display, it could also serve as a less-expensive option for our phablet category, along with the Moto Z Play Droid.

Best Budget Android Smartphones: Huawei Honor 5X (US) and Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 Pro

While the rest of the planet is awash with lower-cost phones containing decent hardware, it’s difficult to recommend a budget smartphone for the US market. Take the Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 Pro, for example. Its Snapdragon 650 SoC contains two high-performance Cortex-A72 CPU cores running at up to 1.8GHz and four Cortex-A53 cores at up to 1.4GHz, which easily outperforms the standard octa-core A53 SoCs common at this price point. Its performance is really quite remarkable, rivaling some upper mid-range and flagship devices. The Adreno 510 GPU supports the latest graphics APIs, including support for tessellation, and is fast enough to play most games currently available. Battery life is excellent too, thanks in part to a large 4050 mAh battery. There’s even an infrared blaster and support for 802.11ac Wi-Fi and FM radio.

Of course some sacrifices need to be made to reach such a low price. The Redmi Note 3 Pro’s weakest component is its 5.5-inch 1080p IPS display, whose poor black level and inaccurate white point and gamma calibration hurt image quality. The panel’s backlight does not fully cover the sRGB gamut, which further reduces color accuracy. While not perfect, it clearly moves the bar higher in this segment and raises our expectations for future lower-cost phones.

honor_5x

Huawei Honor 5X

$193.99 On Amazon

Unfortunately, the Redmi Note 3 Pro, like most phones made by Chinese OEMs, is not sold in the US and does not support the LTE frequencies used by US carriers. Instead US consumers must choose from a number of underwhelming phones such as the LG X Power and its Snapdragon 212 SoC that uses four Cortex-A7 CPU cores—not even A53s—and 1.5GB of RAM. The Huawei Honor 5X cannot match the Redmi Note 3 Pro’s performance or photo quality, but it remains a solid option for the US despite being almost a year old. Even the recently released Moto G4 and G4 Play really do not bring anything new. The Honor 5X recently received a long awaited update to Android 6.0 and EMUI 4.0 and is still available for about $200.

Best Cases for the LG V20

The LG V20 was just announced, and while it’s not yet available for purchase, we do know that it’ll be available in the next few weeks from Best Buy, B&H Photo, AT&TSprint, T-Mobile, Verizon and US Cellular. If you’re looking to pick up the LG V20, then you’ll want to pick up a few cases before hand, so that you can pop it in a case as soon as it arrives, making sure that it is always protected. There are a number of cases already available for the LG V20, and below are the best of the best.

Ringke TPU Defensive Case

ringke-onyx

This is a bit of a different case from Ringke than what we’ve seen before, but it does look stunning on the LG V20. This is a TPU case but don’t take that as meaning that it is a very lightweight case. It’s going to give you plenty of protection for the LG V20, which is already slated as being a pretty tough smartphone. It’s available in mist gray, black and midnight navy.

SPARIN Nature TPU Case

sparin

SPARIN has a clear TPU case here for the LG V20. Allowing you to still show off the beauty that the LG V20 holds. As the LG V20 is a metal smartphone, it does look pretty amazing, and using this SPARIN Nature TPU case will allow you to keep that look, while protecting your investment. It does have a lip to protect that 5.7-inch display as well.

Wimaha Soft TPU Cover

wimaha

This TPU cover is a bit different from the others listed. As you can probably tell, it does indeed have an American flag on the back-side. So you can be patriotic with your LG V20 while also still protecting it. It is a transparent case, and does look quite nice, actually, on the back of the LG V20. But having the American flag on your smartphone isn’t going to fit everyone’s tastes.

Ringke Fusion

ringke-fusion

This is a staple case for just about any smartphone, and Ringke has brought their Fusion TPU case on over to the LG V20. This is a clear TPU case, which allows you to still show off the LG V20. But because it is a clear case, it’s going to attract fingerprints like crazy. That’s something that not everyone is going to be a fan of. This is also one of the cheaper cases available on this list.

LK Ultra TPU Case

lk-ultra

LK has a pretty simple TPU case available for the LG V20. There’s nothing all that special about it, but it does it’s job and that’s what it’s meant to do. It’s available in a few different colors like purple, clear, black, hot pink and mint, so you can really show off your creative side with this TPU case for the LG V20.

Ringke Crystal Clear

ringke-crystal-clear

Ringke has a third TPU case here, this is their Crystal Clear model. It sports a crystal clear back-side, but the sides are available in smoky gray. Which actually looks really nice, especially on the gray color of the LG V20. It does feature drop protection and shock absorption, so you do have protection with this case on your brand new smartphone.

Ballistic Urbanite Select Series Case

lgv20_urbanite

This is actually a hard case, one of the few hard cases available for the LG V20 currently. This means it’s not a TPU case and will likely offer a bit more protection than most of the TPU cases would, as it is not a flexible one. As the name implies, this case is crafted from premium materials, allowing you to protect the beauty of the LG V20.

Ice Plasma Series Case

lgv20_ice-main_grande

Urban Armor Gear has another good looking case for the LG V20. A soft rubberized screen surround and rear skid pads provide 360 degree protection from scratches and abrasions. It’s a pretty cool looking case, easy access tactile buttons and impact resistance shielding. This will definitely provide plenty of coverage for your brand new LG V20 smartphone.

Reasons to buy the LG V20

  • Android 7.0 Nougat – the first Android phone to run version 7.0

Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge

Samsung have been at the top of the Android manufacturing game for several years now, continuing a success story that began way back with the Galaxy S2. Ever since they have looked to build on this, improving power and capability each year.
samsung galaxy s7 edge

The Galaxy S7 range is Samsung’s offering for 2016, with the Edge version being the high end option with a curved AMOLED edge and glass to both sides of the screen. The S7 range manages to be a subtle iteration in design, bringing back once-removed features and delivering a sense of refinement to the positively received Samsung models of 2015.

If you’re looking for a brand new smartphone in 2016 and want to hit the ground running, the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge offers the best in power, performance and looks in the Android space.

Design

When Samsung shifted their design ethos with the S6, embracing premium glass and metal instead of cheaper, glossy plastics, they were widely praised by the industry and community.

The S7 is a continuation of this, refining the edges and button placements to create a smoother, slicker handset, whilst simultaneously adding in support for expandable storage and waterproofing.

The glass on the new S7 range tapers perfectly into the edges of the display, and with the S7 Edge, the curvature down to the final edge is so subtle it’s almost as if the phone moulds into the back panel.

samsung galaxy s7 edge

Display

With the Super AMOLED technology for screen manufactured by Samsung, there has always been an impressive depth to colour reproduction that LCD screens have never quite reached. There is also a marked improvement in power consumption too as S-AMOLED only delivers power to the pixels as and when they need it.

The S7 range makes use of an Always-On screen, realising the true potential of AMOLED technology. With an Always-On screen, it is actually still ‘on’ even when the whole screen goes black, so it’s ready to display instantly. You can even interact with the screen just by glancing at it.

Unique to the Galaxy S7 Edge is the all-new Edge UX, an advancement of the display found on the original Note Edge and last year’s S6 Edge. This allows you to create shortcuts on the Edge display to your preferred apps, contacts and other useful information to personalise and streamline your experience with the phone.

samsung galaxy s7 edge gaming

Camera

Samsung have been very keen to work on their smartphone camera technology in the past few years. This has often been one of the key selling points of any new smartphone, especially as many new phones have similar internal specifications.

For the S7 range, Samsung have actually lowered the camera sensor megapixel to 12, from the S6’s 16. This might seem like a backward step, however any camera aficionado will let you know that it’s not just megapixel rating that creates great pictures.

Samsung have increased the pixel size of the sensor, alongside improving the lens aperture to f/1.7. The result is a drastic increase in the amount of light received by the sensor, vastly improving low-light performance and allowing for more detail in standard scenarios.

A 16:9 wide format has also been chosen which allows for native widescreen shooting and video recording.

The new Dual Pixel system isn’t just for improving low-light imagery either, it also speeds up focussing. Every individual pixel of the 12 million that make up the sensor can act as a focus pixel, which is similar to leading technology in DSLRs.

Power

With a flagship phone we expect to find the leading edge of modern mobile technology and so of course we have this on the S7 Edge.

You can find the S7 Edge on T-Mobile, AT&T, Sprint and Verizon. This beast-of-a-phone is equipped with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor. It has a 2.15 GHz quad-core chip with a incredibly powerful Adreno 530 graphics unit.

Running in tandem with 4GB of RAM, the S7 Edge is more than capable of running pretty much anything anything you can throw. This includes the most recent mobile 3D games, high definition VR content or multiple torrent downloads, with future-proofing for several years.

The S7 Edge includes a 3,500 mAh battery enough to get even power users through to the end of the day.

samsung galaxy s7 edge samsung pay

Connectivity

Both versions of the S7 support all standard connectivity features for a flagship smartphone. So you’ll find 4G / LTE data speeds (up to Cat.9 where supported), dual-band a/b/g/n/ac Wi-Fi, GPS with GLONASS and Beidou support, NFC for one-touch pairing and payments, Bluetooth 4.2 all ready to go.

Fast Charging and wireless charging for both Qi and PMA standards is also built in to the phone so no special accessories are required.

The included charger supports Fast Charging, which will also be catered for through official Samsung accessories and 3rd party units which follow to the official fast charging specifications.

The S7 range is also fully compatible with the Samsung Gear VR so you can experience exclusive 3D games and VR content from the Oculus Store.

samsung galaxy s7 edge fast charging

Security

It was integrated perfectly into the S6 range so it’s no surprise the S7 Edge features a high resolution fingerprint sensor as part of the home button.

During the initial setup of the phone you’ll be prompted to activate the sensor up with at least one fingerprint – this is completely optional though.

Once you have one or more fingerprints registered, you can use these for a variety of features such as unlocking the screen, authorising payments or accessing restricted apps and files.

You can even register other people’s fingerprints, to give them access. With Android’s profile permissions and Samsung’s additions to these, other authorised users can see a completely different version of your phone to you, hiding certain apps or folders, or not providing access to features such as the camera or gallery.

Samsung Knox is also available, as always for flagship Samsung phones. Knox is Samsung’s specialised container for your sensitive content.

It’s your decision to initialise Knox or not. If you do then you can transfer documents, pictures, contact information and messages into the secure Knox container, which encrypts them and keeps them safe should the phone ever get lost, stolen or otherwise fall into the wrong hands.

Protection

Not every phone has an IP rating and when they do they’re usually the more rugged and chunky looking devices. IP ratings denote ingress protection against water, dust and other small particles like sand.

The Galaxy S7 has been provided an IP rating of 68. This means it can be submerged in fresh water to a depth of 1 metre for half an hour, as well as resisting direct jets of pressurised water.

Best Google Nexus 6P cases

Nexus 6P cases
Without a doubt, the Google Nexus 6P is a pretty sweet smartphone. It is fast, powerful, and probably the best device to experience Android in its latest, purest form. But as a recent Nexus 6P teardown showed, repairing the phone could be a real challenge. Of course, yours probably won’t go through the extreme torture session we recently saw, but you just don’t know what might result after an accidental slip out of your jacket. Or if you happen to sit on it while it is in your back pocket. Or if it falls off the roof of your car. Or… you get the idea.

Thankfully, someone has already invented protective smartphone cases. They keep our gadgets safe from harm and don’t really cost all that much. And if you’re in the market for a Nexus 6P case, there’s already a variety of offerings to pick from. Below are listed the best Nexus 6P cases we could dig up. The Samsung Galaxy Note 5 has been unveiled and is now available to buy from all carriers.

The Samsung Galaxy Note 5 is an absolute stunner and looks very beautiful. Just as an overview, you’re getting a 5.7″ 2560×1440 AMOLED display, Samsung’s Exynos 7420 SoC, 4GB of LPDDR4 RAM, and 32, 64, or 128GB of internal NAND.
